Our food philosophy is to offer a wide selection of wholesome traditional fare with a contemporary twist complimented by fine wines, beers and spirits. Not forgetting coffee. All presented in the warm and friendly setting of a pub which has witnessed many local and world events through its three hundred and fifty year history. We are also opening our own Nano brewery in June.

From outside the Speckled Hen seems quite petite. On internal inspection the Pub boasts a traditional public bar with an inviting fireplace. The original pub dates back to at least 1660.
It is reputed that Daniel O’Connell, the Irish Statesman stopped at the pub during a trip to Belfast.
In 1939 Willis, the tobacco company commissioned an artist to travel throughout the British Isles to memorialise pubs for a cigarette card collection. The Speckled Hen, then known as the Village Inn, was one of only two Irish pubs included in the collection. An original set of the cigarette cards is on display in the dining room.

The idea for the new name came from the owner’s granny who would say her speckled hens were the friendliest, tastiest and most productive of all the hens she kept.

It is rumoured the ghost of Johnston Bell, a previous owner, is an occasional nocturnal visitor. Over the years previous owners and customers have spoken about flickering lights and smelling a very distinctive pipe tobacco in the dining room. The dining room housed the original pub and incorporated the home of previous owners.

A wide selection of over seventy draught and bottled beers along with over thirty bottled ciders are served. While the public bar seats approximately forty customers, the snug lounge used for dining holds a further thirty six. In addition the pub has a dining room with fifty six covers. The dining room is warm and homely yet has a very contemporary feel.

The pub serves lunch and evening menus along with a traditional Sunday menu. Breakfast is served Saturday and Sunday.

A beer garden has recently been added to the pub.
